Why, before we met him on the way to the river, did he not pay attention to his mother, but now he hasn’t lagged behind for 2 years?

In August 2021, my mother and I went to the river and once on the way there we met our school security guard. And from then on he fell in love with his mother. He started asking me about her, what kind of flowers/candies she likes, etc. Then I found out her number (I stupidly gave him the number). He visited us two or three times a long time ago, asked to help at the dacha several times, dug beds there, helped take out or rearrange some things, fried kebabs (I didn’t go with them, my mother told me that). This year he invited us to the river many times and we went. Moreover, he hardly swam. Only if it’s mom. Now he hardly communicates with me at all, and my mother has calls from him on her phone almost every day. Well, he doesn’t interfere in our lives anymore, they only communicate on the phone, he hasn’t come to us for a long time. I have been studying at school for almost 10 years, my mother came there several times during these 10 years, and he did not react to her at all. And now he’s broken loose and is trying to look after her. Why was he so short-circuited??
