Fantastic. What worked and what didn’t?
I’ll create a topic, I hope the forum will support it. Inspired by the lack of decent fiction in recent years. No, I’m not talking about a primitive viewing experience at the Marvel/DS level. And about something more worthy of wasting time. You can remember the TV series too. tell someone what happened.
I decided to look at "From the Outside". But I was pretty disappointed. The theme of mysticism/fantasy/horror is very close to me (I love King, too), but the series descended into chatter literally right away...
But by the way, nothing worthwhile has been filmed based on King for a long time... What do you mean? is flawed compared to "The Shining" "Doctor Sleep"... Baby talk... But for example "Stranger" was not bad. Not ideal, but passable.
In general, write, who liked what from science fiction?

Re: Fantastic. What worked and what didn’t?
I’m a fan of American Horror Story, not all seasons, but still.
Respect to the actors who play a different character in each season.
I love horror, but I haven’t seen any good ones for a long time. Or maybe I was more impressionable before, now it’s hard to scare))
From my favorites, darkness, for example, if I remember something else, I’ll write, I haven’t woken up yet
Py. Sy. I saw horrors in the text and wrote about horrors, but the title, however, was about science fiction
I definitely didn’t wake up

Re: Fantastic. What worked and what didn’t?
But science fiction in cinema is a very broad topic. "From the Outside" that TS is talking about, or "Aquaman" or "The Master and Margarita" - all this is essentially fantasy.
Horror and science fiction are often intertwined into a single genre, American Horror Story - by the way , a very good series.

Nobody can come up with anything better than "Star Wars" in science fiction
Although I personally also like films about time travel or about a "time loop", like "Groundhog Day".

Nowadays it’s not profitable to make films with deep meaning, they won’t pay for themselves at the box office, now we need action, a simpler picture and plot)

Yes, "Edge of the Future" - nothing like that, very dynamic.
But " Interstellar didn’t work: too abstruse.
But I like "Happy Death Day"
PS. Of course, I like "Men in Black"!! I generally adore sci-fi comedies.

The Matrix - fifty-fifty. Transformers - just a one-time watch.
Plageta of monkeys is only the first part of the norm.
There are some good ones from Marvel, yes. For example, I liked "Eternals".
Many of Nolan’s ones are quite good. For example, "Start".

Re: Fantastic. What worked and what didn’t?
However, don’t get hung up on it, I gave it as an example.
Edge of Tomorrow and Interstellar - both came in and were good. This is rarely filmed.
Happy Death Day - I didn’t watch it. This will be something to look at over the weekend.
Well, "the beginning" yes, my respects.
From the fact that I really like it offhand - "12 Monkeys" was quite good.
I have a lot of respect for Aronofsky. "Fountain" is one of my favorites (of course it’s not science fiction)
Tarsem Singh - my respect, but it doesn’t shoot smoothly, sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s garbage. "The Cage" and "Outland" are great films in my opinion. If it comes to mind, I’ll add it.

Well, this is... not for everyone. In principle, I respect the series, but I wouldn’t say it’s the best. The old films are quite naive, but interesting to watch, but the new ones somehow didn’t work, the characters are “not the same compote.”

And the average viewer, apparently, is a little stupid and expects a picture and a plot in three lines.

If it’s on topic, and so that it all comes together: the series plus King plus time travel - I unexpectedly liked "Secrets of Haven". And another recent one is the British "Hour of the Devil" (but this is no longer according to King).

Probably should have been indicated in the topic title, but there was no way to edit it.
admin, or you can somehow correct the topic title to
"Fiction (films/series). What worked and what didn’t?"
Otherwise there will be confusion. I understand that people don’t look at which section the topic is in and what’s in the first post.

Re: Fantastic. What worked and what didn’t?
From science fiction...so...can mysticism come here too? According to King, the film adaptations: "Storm of the Century" - I think it’s an excellent, like a 4-hour film, "The Confrontation", "Losing Thinner", "Tomminockers", "Dreamcatcher", "Langoriers" , "Salem’s Fate", etc. The movie "Foundation" was made based on Isaac Asimov - I still haven’t figured out whether he’s "good" or "bad" (the book is very cool), "I’m a Robot." More films "The Omen" all parts (old version), "The Exorcist". Let them not scold me; I write mostly mysticism. "In the mouth of madness", "Dreams", "1408", "Mirrors", "The Day After Tomorrow" (more like a disaster movie..), "Pandorum", "Lex "The series is interesting in its own way. I’ll write something I remember..

Re: Fantastic. What worked and what didn’t?
Of the recent ones that impressed me, I liked “Arrival” more than Interstellar. I rewatched it several times, because the meaning is double bottomed.
Also the miniseries 11.22.63 based on King. But it’s better to read the novel first. The novel is more complete and after the novel the film is clearer, a lot is missed in the film, but after the novel the film adaptation was very interesting. It’s not written in King’s style at all: there’s none of that characteristic build-up at the beginning, it’s captivating from the first pages

Re: Fantastic. What worked and what didn’t?
There is already such a topic.
A series of books by the Strugatskys about the world of Midday. Perhaps I’ll list:
“Noon, XXII century”, “Attempt to escape”, “Distant Rainbow”, “It’s hard to be a god”, “Inhabited Island”, “Baby”, “Guy from the Underworld”, “ A beetle in an anthill" and "The waves extinguish the wind."
This is a world in which I would like to live. We screwed up the first attempt to build it by the end of the 80s. I hope we will return to that path.

If we talk about the Fantasy genre, even if it is not serious, then I really liked the film and the book “The Lord of the Rings” by Tolkien and the series “Game of Thrones” based on the books “A Song of Ice and Fire” by J. Martina. Moreover, “Game of Thrones” amazed me to such an extent... that I simply cannot put it into words. To what extent I don’t like TV series... somehow they are “theatrical” artificial or something. But this series is just like "The Lord of the Rings", in terms of the scale of filming and in each individual episode, and then the seasons.....

Таккого масштаба, качества я просто не ожидала. все продумано до мелочей. Даже актеров набирали по всему миру, в каждый новый сезон. Один наш Колокольников чего стоит в одном из сезонов...

Re: Fantastic. What worked and what didn’t?
But damn, if they made a series of this scale based on the works of our writers, then Game of Thrones would seem like a children’s fairy tale... For example, Alexey Pekhov... first he wrote alone, then with his wife. and when she or he got a girlfriend))) damn people live... one husband and two wives))).. but that’s not about that now...

And from the mine came "Storm in a Teacup" and about Fyodor Sumkin and Shmyga. But that’s my opinion. The markers are different...

"The Secret City" is good somewhere up to book 6.
Early Belyanin is not bad. Well, Oleg Divov, especially his "Dog Master".

Re: Fantastic. What worked and what didn’t?
Since school, I still really loved science fiction and read it mainly in the form of chapters with continuations in the magazines "Chemistry and Life" and some others that my father subscribed to.
I also came across something from Soviet science fiction in periodicals called Roman -newspaper. Which my father also prescribed.
All this fiction was exclusively Soviet, and everywhere all these works were based on the fact that something like that happened to some of ours or scientists. Or some kind of research institute workers.
There was practically no fiction about events outside the USSR. And in the eighties and nineties, all this diversity fell on us. At one time, I even took Moshkov’s entire library on the topic of science fiction from the Internet using some kind of clever program. And there was a ton of everything there.
And then on the long winter evenings I tried to find at least something interesting. But alas. All the works are somehow stilted. Either they are written as if they were a carbon copy of some other work that you have already seen.
Or this work is somehow wretched and more suitable for reading by primary school readers. Yes, and it is usually written according to some patterns - the beginning, the denouement, and so on.
For two or three chapters, the structure of the world in question is described at the beginning for some reason. And the world is described supposedly as something different, but for some reason the people in it are from our world. With the same troubles.
Well, in general, it’s kind of boring, all this science fiction that I’ve watched a lot. Apparently it’s true that to write fiction you have to be a little crazy. Or maybe eat some mushrooms so that you can see everything that you describe later with your own eyes, so to speak. And not to suck everything out of thin air.
But nevertheless, at first I did not lose hope, and took any work from Moshkov’s library, and began reading right from the middle. And all the time I ended up with some kind of wretched and boring crap. People tried to write about something that never happened and that they themselves had never seen. And I must admit, they did it badly.
And all because they apparently lacked imagination. That is, they essentially had to come up with a whole world that had its own logic and its own model. And this whole world had to be invented with its inhabitants, economy, society, technology, transport, weapons, household things.
Take even the same Kin dza dza. It would seem like bullshit and not a movie. At one time I generally considered it some kind of hack and spoof.
But in fact, it’s very worthy from the point of view of fiction.
By the way, at the moment the only thing I consider truly worthy , then these are both Predators, the second, third and fourth Alien, the second Terminator and the first Matrix.
But these are films. And of course I would like to read something on this topic. And there’s just nothing to read.
I think that there’s simply no demand for these things. People find all this boring to read.
And in general, who reads these books now?
Although recently I have come across projects on the Internet that usually describe some kind of a victim who ended up during the Mongol-Tatar yoke. Or in ancient Greece during the time of Alexander the Great, or during the Roman Empire. And the essence of this project is to interest the reader, where he is given a quarter of the book to read, and then to finish reading what happened next, he has to pay a little money.
From the point of view of description, this writing is quite easy - there is no need to pull anything out of thin air about the Roman Empire - everything is more or less known. You just need to revive the actions of certain characters, put some dialogue into their mouths, and think over the general outline of the book. So to speak, outline a table of contents for the chapters, and what will be described in each chapter. And then patiently fill these cells with letters.
For a self-respecting potential reader, all this is also quite sad.
